Koishiwara Kiln was established at the beginning of the Edo era (1600-1868) and it is one of the potteries that English potter Bernard Leach was deeply impressed by their craftsmanship as "beauty in utility". Special features of these wares include the way the pottery is decorated using brush strokes on large dishes and large pots with chatter marks. Using these techniques (tobikanna, hakeme, and kushime) have barely been altered over the centuries.
